Our Story
The story of Stella's Hair & Beauty Salon begins with the original Stella, who established her hair styling business and dedicated 27 years of her life to serving the Barnsley community. After Stella's retirement, the salon changed hands and names several times, but the spirit of professional hairdressing remained at its heart.
In November 1990, Ann purchased the salon from Kathy, who had restored the name back to "Stella's" in honour of its founder. Ann brought her own vision and dedication to the business, building a team of skilled professionals who shared her commitment to excellence. Among them was Sharon, who joined the team and has remained a cornerstone of the salon for an incredible 30 years, continuing to serve clients with the same passion and expertise.
The salon truly became a family affair when Ann's daughter Sarah, who had always dreamed of becoming a hairdresser, started working as a Saturday girl at just 13 years old. Now, 20 years later, Sarah has become an integral part of the business and has two daughters of her own. As the next generation, Sarah is poised to continue the family legacy, ensuring that Stella's remains a cherished part of the Barnsley community for years to come.
In a touching moment that connected past and present, after Ann renovated the salon in 2015 (25 years after purchasing it), the original Stella telephoned and asked if she could visit. This reunion brought together the salon's founder with Ann and the team, creating a beautiful bridge between the establishment's heritage and its modern success. Stella passed away a few years later, but her legacy lives on in the salon that still bears her name.
Today, as the 2025 England's Business Awards winner for Best Hair & Beauty Salon in South Yorkshire, Stella's continues to honor its rich history whilst embracing contemporary techniques and trends. Our three-generation story reflects our enduring commitment to quality, professionalism, and the warm, family-oriented service that has made us a trusted part of the Barnsley community for decades.
